Switching Back to Roundwounds?

I'm thinking about going back to roundwounds vs the flatwounds I've had on my Ibanez jazzbox for years. I think it will give my guitar more of an acoustic tone.

Any really good roundwound jazz strings out there? I was checking out the TI George Benson nickel rounds .012s, which utilize a wound third string (G). But the price is steep; $19.00/set.

Any recommendations on quality and value?

Here's one for you guys up on your theory and / or sense of arrangement. I'm a jazz novice with only the regular chops for blues type stuff with 9th , 13th , augmented chords etc [ T-Bone Walker ? ]. I don't read music. I wondered if anyone might steer me in the right direction on something more advanced ? I know without the music in front of you this could be asking a bit much, but any ideas would help. My problem revolves around jazz chord voicings and how subtle they can or...

I found this youtube of Kevin Eubanks. Looks like a D-18. Those guys in the Tonight Show band (now, the "Prime Time Band") are the best of the best (IMHO). When you strip away the glitz of the TV show, it opens up a window into why those guys are in the band. Hope you enjoy:

I was at a garage sale recently and the guy having it has played jazz guitar since the '60s. He was selling his minty vinyl collection of mostly jazz guitarists. We got talking about guitars and he said that he'd prefer someone who enjoyed guitar to get the albums. "You can have the whole box for ten bucks." Now I've got 100 albums to absorb.

I've listened to jazz for a long time, but I haven't really tried to play it -- the chords are too weird, and the changes too fast. But this tune seems manageable. And I need to get some old standard worked out by next week so I can jam with my dad...

This lovely piece by the one and only Mr Ralph Towner is called 'Toledo'. The arrangement is like the one on the album he did with Gary Peacock some years back called 'A Closer View' - a beautiful album to be sure. Ralph actually seems to be struggling a bit here, but it's still great. Hope you folks (or cats as the case may be) enjoy it.

Jazz Resources?

Well, I've decided to take the plunge and learn to play some jazz guitar. Last week saw me pick up a Les Paul Studio which will be here on Tuesday. The guitar was purchased two days before his death which in my mind makes it pretty special. Hearing Les play in different post mortum videos has really hooked me. The video in the next post has really touched me and perhaps given me the bug. Or maybe it is just a desire to really make use of a new instrument.

Which might be better? Ibanez AK95 or Epiphone ES175?

We've seen threads on favourite albums, favourite guitarists, albums, amps, and what not. Lately I've been really pondering how to draw the warmest, sweetest sounds possible out of my Tom Anderson Hollow T Classic. Destined for a bit of tinkering methinks. I've been realising for a while I've gotta try some flatwound strings, and am looking into it. Any advice in this area would be most welcome I have to say.

Gibson Flat Wires flatwound strings - discontinued and I'm bummed!

I just found out that my favorite flatwound strings have been discontinued!

I've been using Gibson Flat Wires (Stainless Steel Flatwound, electric guitar, medium gauge [SEG-1040M] [12,16,23,31,42,54]) for a few years and they have become my clear favorite.

I've only got a couple sets left, so I went to reorder...but learned that Gibson discontinued this string a year or two ago! Apparently, I must have bought a box from the last batch.

Loar LH 600 VS

Okay, I've never owned and archtop of any make. But for around $900 new the Loar LH 600 VS hand-carved, sounds like a nice introduction.

School me on under a $1000 entry level archtops.

The other one I was interested in was the Godin 5th Avenue, pressed laminate. About $400 dollars cheaper, oops, less expensive. :-/ Though I thought, via Youtube of both models, the Loar sounded better.

Out of tune guitars??!

OK, this is strange. I have a few jazz recordings that I really like but I can't listen to because the guitars are out of tune! I'm thinking of a couple by Joe Pass and one wonderful but downright painful recording by Kenny Burrell. Now, I know many of these recordings were done before the days of digital tuners, but man - if I notice it, wouldn't you think the producer or the recording engineer or WHOEVER would have said - uh, hey... you're not in tune! Anyone else notice this?

Anybody here using a volume pedal?

I've just recently been playing more amplified jazz....plywood archtops with P-90s and such.

I know there aren't many of us posting about this stuff here, but thought I'd look for info anyway.

It seems to me that a volume pedal would be just the thing for moving into and backing out of the mix or getting all puffed up and then deflating in a more musical way...

If anyone here uses one of these can I get your recommends for what you like best for...
